Despite the cool, drizzly, and overcast weather of last week, the resident cardinals sang loudly throughout the afternoons. Only the exuberant males were in site.
While in Kentucky, I saw and heard them. I miss them, as we don’t have them here. I also heard a mockingbird imitating one, which really got to the cardinal, who competed. The whole thing was beautiful to me, but I think the cardinal was kind of mad.
Yes, me too. I do love the mountain bluebirds SO much. Our western bluebirds, very much like your eastern ones, I love too. Sometimes when they hover, their red breasts and blue wings blur together and it looks purple. Sadly, both their populations have gone down about 75% here over the last 10 years. God, Hazel, doesn’t it just break your heart to see these declines in so many species? I try to be in the moment and grateful for what is here, but I can’t help being sad (and mad).
Love those cardinals especially the brave ones who stick it out in the winter. A flash of red in the very white of the winter. Love you Jan

I never saw them in Winterport, so I am all the more excited to see them in my current backyard!

This is the eastern bird I think I miss the most
I miss mountain bluebirds from the west! Though our eastern ones are pretty great, too…
